Alfred Blaine Mills, affectionately known as "Bud" or "AB" to his friends and family, passed away on November 27, 2016 at the age of 82. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on March 25, 1934 and was the son of Dr. Alfred B. Mills and Hazel Howell Mills. Mr. Mills lived in New Boston as a young man and graduated from Glenwood High School. He worked at the Ohio Stove Company prior to working at the "A-plant" (Goodyear Atomic Corporation) where he worked most of his career. He worked in chemical operations and sheet metal shop including work on the Manhattan Project before retiring after many years of service. He was widely known for his practical jokes and volleyball skills and was often seen jogging around the plant in his heavy work boots. He had many interests, a true thirst for knowledge, and was a history buff in all he did. He liked working with his hands and was able to build or fix almost anything. He loved model railroad shows, enjoyed going to flea markets, and liked taking his sons-in-law on hiking adventures in the woods and sharing about the local history. He was an avid collector, and enjoyed reading and learning and frequently studied the encyclopedia. Although he loved his dog, Sandy, he also had a soft spot for cats and rescued more than a couple, taking them home as a gift to his wife. He was a member of the Cold War Patriots and a Brother of the Masonic Fraternity for 16 years of Masonic service with the Western Sun Masonic Lodge NR 91 of Wheelersburg, Ohio and was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason September 25, 2001. Brother Alfred Mills leadership and innovative guidance will be missed by his brothers in the Masonic traditions of the inner circles of the Fraternity of Masons -but- his memories will not be forgotten. Donations can be made in memory or in honor of Bud to the Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund.
Mr. Mills is survived by his wife of 62 years, Herma Cabiness Mills; two daughters, Maryjane Haney (Seth) and Sarah Mills Wages; grandchildren, Seth Haney (Emily), Emily Kissel (Jake), and Caleb Haney (Hannah); great-granddaughters, Abigail Kissel and Cora Haney; his sister, Emma Mills Clark; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at WOLFE-NELSON FUNERAL HOME in Sciotoville with Pastor Chuck Glover officiating.
