Age 80 of Wheelersburg, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016 at his residence.  He was born on May 23, 1935 in Scioto County.  He is a son to the late Albert and Violet Shope Smith.

Caryold is survived by his wife, Shirley, whom he married on July 16, 1955; his two sons Merit (Sandy) of South Webster and Murray (Rhonda) of Wheelersburg;  two daughters Mitzi (Tim) Tracy of Lexington, KY, and Tina Moore of Wheelersburg;  one sister, Frankie Cunningham of Columbus; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Caryold was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Lou Smith; two brothers, Albert Smith, Jr. and Jim Smith; and four sisters, Goldie Whittington, Muriel Hager, Piccola Ruth, and Wanda Noel.

Caryold was a proud member of the 1952 graduating class of South Webster High School.  He served as a Bloom-Vernon Local Schools school board member from 1978-1982.

He worked for Harbison Walker from 1952-1970. He then worked for Lone Star Cement from 1970-1987 and served as the President of the Steel Workers Local Union.  In 1987 he began working for Wal-Mart and continued there until 1994.  He then began working as a Crew Operator for the Department of Human Services, retiring in 2001.

Caryold was an avid hunter and loved spending time at the cabin.  He looked forward to family reunions, where he was always taking pictures.  He was a hard-working and compassionate man.  His presence will be greatly missed by those who called him Papaw, Dad, brother, husband, or friend.

Services will be held Tuesday May 24, 2016 at the D.W. Swick-Nelson Funeral Home in South Webster with Merit Smith officiating.  A celebration of Caryold's life will begin at 2:00 p.m. with interment following at Vernon Cemetery.  Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.  Online condolences may be left at www.DWSwickNelsonFuneralHome.com.
