Obituary

Curtis W. Phipps, 89 of Wheelersburg, passed away Friday, December 19, 2014 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born November 13, 1925 in New Boston to the late Chauncey Everett Phipps and Pearl DePriest Phipps Bradley. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine DeLille and three brothers, Arnold Phipps, Wayne Phipps, and Harold Phipps.

Curt is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia (Jenny) Workman Phipps; four children, Darryl (Connie) Phipps, Merryn (Terry) Weaver, Robin Phipps, and Dwayne (Tami) Phipps. He leaves eleven grandchildren, Amanda (Ben) Cook, Allison Figlestahler, Gretchen (Matt) Territo, Kirby (Wells) Flowers, Matthew (Chris) Phipps, Mikka Phipps, Chelsea Phipps, Aubrey Phipps, Alisha (Scott) Newsome, Alex (Tate) Preston, and Tyler Phipps; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, June Buckley. Curt graduated from Portsmouth West High School and then from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He worked at Ashland Oil, was a chemist at the A Plant, and was a retiree of the New Boston Coke Corporation.

Curt was a World War II Veteran, inducted in 1944. He was a Corporal and Squad Leader in the 9 th Infantry Regiment 2 nd Infantry Division. He fought in battles in Ardennes, Rhineland, central Europe, and in The Battle of the Bulge. He received the following citations and decorations: The American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the Victory Medal, and the World War II Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the American Legion.

Curt attended Sciotodale Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies included genealogy, woodworking, sailboats, and beach vacationing with his family. He loved his family whole-heartedly, and was a true to inspiration to others. He exemplified kindness and humility, was deeply loved, and will be dearly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2014 at Sciotodale Free Will Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Ohio with Pastor Aaron Reed and Rev. Ed Cox officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, December 21, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.swickbussachamberlin.com .
