Age 84 of South Webster, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2015 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. She was born on November 2, 1930 in Portsmouth to Jasper and Gertrude (Bear) Jordan. Emma was a 1948 graduate of Portsmouth East High School and worked for Mitchellace for several years right out of school. She became a fulltime homemaker and enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, and camping with her family. She traveled frequently to Myrtle Beach and especially enjoyed her five driving trips to Alaska, camping and fishing along the way.
Emma is survived by her husband of 65 years, William O. Shumate, Sr., known as Toby to all; son, William, Jr. (Peggy) of Wellston; daughter, Stephanie Vance (Rob) of Mingo Junction; a sister, Jacquelyn Hamilton of Portsmouth; a brother, Jasper Jordan of Sciotoville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie and a brother, Virgil Jordan.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2015 at D.W. Swick-Nelson Funeral Home in South Webster with Pastor Merit Smith officiating. Interment will follow at South Webster Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 12 – 2 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
