George S. McCune, 95, of Portsmouth died Wednesday morning, July 29, 2009 at his residence. He was born December 26, 1913 in Athens, to the late Archie and Nellie (Fawcett) McCune. George worked for Empire Detroit Steel for over 38 years and retired in 1970. He was a longtime member of the AFL-CIO. He enjoyed hobby farming, landscaping, and the company of his dog Nellie and donkey Kate. George built his own home in 1950 from hand sawed lumber from his property that he cut. George is survived by a daughter, Hattie White (Bruce) of Rosemount, three sons, George McCune (Lynn) of Buchanan, OH, John McCune (Mary Ann) of Ashtabula, OH, and Richard McCune of Buchanan, OH, two sisters, Joliet McCune and Juanita Lawrence both of Belfry, OH, 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Inez (Stone) McCune, who died May 23, 1996 and a grandson, Richard McCune Jr. The family would like to thank Bruce White for being such a great caregiver to George for his last few months. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday July 31, 2009 at the Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:30. Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville is handling the arrangements.
