October 17, 1916 – April 15, 2009
Helen Louise West, 92, of Portsmouth, formerly of Wellston, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday April 15, 2009 at SOMC Hospice. She was born October 17, 1916 in Wellston to the late Andrew and Clara McGhee Holzapfel. Helen was a graduate of Wellston High School, & after graduation, she married Clarence West in 1942. She was an avid gardener, who loved the outdoors, including bird watching & planting flowers. Helen had a passion for quilting, knitting, and stitching, & also was well-rounded in music, where she played the violin for many years in a local orchestra in Wellston. Helen was devoted to her church & she was a member of Altar & Rosary Society. She shared her knowledge of her hobbies and love for nature by volunteering her time as a Girl Scout Leader, where she was a mentor to many young women over the years. Above all, she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She lived in Wellston until 2002, when she moved to her daughter's house in Portsmouth. She is survived by a son, James A. "Jimmy" West of Las Vegas, NV & a daughter, Connie Smith (Gary) of Portsmouth, 4 grandsons, J.C. Spearry (Barbara) of Aurora, OH, John Spearry (Natalie) of Gates Mills, OH, Todd West of Las Vegas, NV, & Ryan West (Kathy) of Las Vegas, NV, 5 great-grandchildren, Tristan, Belina, Carter, Peyton, & Reagan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence "Wimpy" West, who died in 1956, a brother, Andy Holzapfel, 3 sisters, Lena Holzapfel, Katherine Jacobs, & Patti Kelly, & a grandson, Lawrence "Larry" West. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 p.m. Monday April 20, 2009 at Saints Peter & Paul Church in Wellston with Father Donald Maroon officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives may call at Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home on Sunday April 19, 2009 from 2 to 5 p.m. Memorials are preferred to Saints Peter & Paul School in Wellston in lieu of flowers. Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville is handling the arrangements.
