Herbert Ray Mowery, Sr., 66 of Sciotoville, died peacefully at home where he wanted to be on Sunday, May 25, 2014 with his wife by his side.

Herb was born in Portsmouth on February 17, 1948 to the late John "Doc" and Minnie (Boggs) Mowery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lorrene Ward, and three brothers, Hobart, John, and James. He is survived by his wife, Pam; sons, Herb Jr. of Wheelersburg, Ben (Amanda) of Indianapolis, IN; daughter Miranda (Chris) Hancock of New Palestine, IN; grandchildren Courtney, Caleb, Ella, and Karissa; sisters, Mary Snyder, Juanita Smith, Flora (Warren) Cooley all of Sciotoville, Kay (Jim) Horsley of Wheelersburg, Helen Helton of South Shore, KY, Ruth of Cleveland, and Sue Morris of Ranger, GA; many nieces and nephews; two very special brothers-in-law, Jim Horsley and Garry Fuller; and his inherited daughter "#4" Jill Iery.

Herb served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart with four bronze stars as well as the M16 Sharpshooter classification. Upon his return, he gave the cable company 32 years of service and would probably still be there today if his health hadn't gotten bad. He was known everywhere not as Herb, but as the "Cable Guy". He lived to fish and kept at it till his health kept him from it. His favorite times were spent with Dan Jenkins and the late Bob Seals. He will be missed by all who knew him. Herb left in the arms of the angels with no oxygen needed.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville with Pastor Mike Musser officiating. Interment will follow at Vernon Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the James Dickey American Legion Post #23. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
