Joseph V. Johnson, 76, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth. Born on September 25, 1949, in Barberton, Ohio, a son of the late Leonard and Jean (Newcomer) Johnson.
Throughout his career, Joseph earned a well-deserved reputation in the auto body repair community for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality work. His retirement marked the conclusion of a distinguished career, though his enthusiasm for classic cars remained a vibrant and defining aspect of his life. Beyond the garage, Joseph found profound joy in the relationships he cultivated with his family, especially cherishing the moments spent with his great-grandchildren.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn, who stood steadfastly by his side; his son Brett McCutcheon, who resides in North Dakota with Robert Vigil; and his daughter Lori Shultz, alongside her husband Rich, living in Portsmouth. He also leaves behind his three sisters: Lori (Roger) Strang and Beverly Kapitanovich, both residing in Wheelersburg, and Diane Sharrer of Akron. His line of descent includes his granddaughter McKenzie Cartee and his great-grandchildren Marley and Archer, all of whom held a special place in Joseph’s heart.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Jean (Newcomer) Johnson, sisters, Barbara Craig, and Brenda Tomlin. Their legacy lives on through Joseph’s enduring influence on his family and the countless individuals who admired his dedication to his craft and his character.
Joseph V. Johnson’s life was marked by a blend of professional accomplishment and personal warmth. His passion for classic cars and his steadfast devotion to family created a rich tapestry of experience and memories.
