Katherine Kay Bates, 76, formerly of Sciotoville, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Cumming, GA. She was born July 19, 1948, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Robert Hazelbaker and Delores Hazelbaker Risner.

Katherine was a former member of the Portsmouth Eagles Auxiliary, Moose Auxiliary, Local Legion #471 Ladies club, American Legion Post #23 Auxiliary and was a Kentucky Colonel. She was also a seamstress who enjoyed making her own clothes and crocheting.

Katherine is survived by a son, Derek (Melissa) Runyon; a brother, David Hazelbaker, sister Linda Sue Johnson along with several grandchildren.

Katherine was also preceded in death by a son, Kris Runyon and her husband John Robert Bates.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 AM Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at D.W. SWICK FUNERAL HOME (Wolfe-Nelson Chapel) in Sciotoville followed by a Graveside Service at 11:30 AM at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pastor Lynn Wessel officiating.
