Mary (Garrett) Carter, formerly of Wheelersburg, Ohio passed away peacefully at the Central Ohio Hospice Care Unit in Newark early Friday morning, December 16, 2016. Mary had been a resident of Zanesville, Ohio for the past 6 years. Born in South Webster, Ohio on June 20, 1928, Mary was the daughter of Orba and Blanche (Smith) Garrett.

Mary's life is celebrated by her two daughters, Brenda (Don) Schreiber of Westerville and Kathy Carter Robbins of Coshocton; her four grandsons, Ben (Ashley) Schreiber, Adam Schreiber (fiancée Elaine English) of Columbus, A.J. (Mandy) Robbins of Zanesville, and Alex Robbins of Coshocton; and two great-granddaughters, Abby Robbins and Kate Schreiber. Mary also has one surviving brother, Howard (Jo Ann) Garrett of Springfield in addition to many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband Ernest E. (Gene) Carter in May of 2007, to whom she was married on November 18, 1950. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Dennis Garrett, Fred Garrett, Don Garrett, and infant Francis Garrett.

Mary was raised on the family farm in South Webster, Ohio, and then later graduated from Portsmouth East High School in 1946. She was employed by American Savings and Loan in Portsmouth, Ohio and retired from there in 1988 with 26 years of service to the association and the community. Mary was a member of the Business and Professional Women, Soroptimist International, and served the United Way. She was a volunteer for RSVP serving Meals on Wheels and for Best Care Nursing Home.

Mary was a member of Union Freewill Baptist Church in Wheelersburg, Ohio and a former member of the Boulevard EUB/United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, Ohio. She faithfully walked with her Lord all of her days and shared her gifts of hospitality and service generously.

Friends and family may call on Monday, December 19th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at WOLFE-NELSON FUNERAL HOME. Praise and worship services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 20th at the funeral home with Pastor Chris Oiler officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth, Ohio.
