Opal Smith Dials, 92 of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at SOMC Hospice. She was born May 16, 1921 in Scioto Furnace, the daughter of the late Lorenzo and Tillie Montgomery Carpenter. Opal was also preceded in death by her husband and father of her children, Ralph S. Smith and second husband, James Dials; two sons, Jerry and Glenn Smith; one daughter-in-law, Mildred Smith; five brothers and one sister. She was a former Mercy Hospital employee in housekeeping and had worked at South Webster School Systems in the cafeteria. Opal was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in South Webster and the Daughters of America. She was a great quilter, loved to crotchet, and was famous for her homemade noodles.
