Listen to Obituary

Ralph L. Bussey, 85, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, with his loving daughter by his side.

Born on March 14, 1941, in Scioto County, Ohio, Ralph was the son of the late Williard and Virginia (McClintic) Bussey. He dedicated 35 years of service as a design draftsman for Tanner Stone, where his craftsmanship, attention to detail, and strong work ethic earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike.

A lifelong member of the Portsmouth community, Ralph was actively involved in both civic and social organizations throughout his life. He was a former member of Franklin Avenue Methodist Church and enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests. Ralph found joy in wood crafting, camping, golfing, fishing, bowling, and spending time with friends. He was a proud member of the Portsmouth Jaycees, participated in a popular 1950s skating group, enjoyed square dancing, and, alongside his beloved wife Georgene and daughter Denise, enjoyed making and selling handmade crafts at local events.

Ralph was deeply committed to public service. He served Portsmouth's Fifth Ward on Portsmouth City Council for ten years and also had the honor of serving as Mayor of Portsmouth. His dedication to improving his community and serving its citizens left a lasting impact. He was also a member of the United Retired Travelers.

Ralph's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his daughter, Denise M. Newman of Portsmouth; his brother, Harold Bussey of Texas; grandchildren, Keith (Carrie) Dunn of Lancaster, Justin Dunn of Dayton, Amanda (Keith) Spencer of West Portsmouth, Tiffany (Jason) Carver of West Portsmouth, and Christopher (C.J.) Bussey of New Boston; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of many years, Georgene (Kalb) Bussey, who passed away on September 16, 2023, and by his son, Christopher Scott Bussey, who passed away on December 23, 2017.

Ralph will be remembered for his kindness, dedication to family, commitment to community service, and the friendships he cultivated throughout his life. His legacy of hard work, generosity, and civic pride will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Funeral Service is Tuesday, June 16, 2026, 1:00 PM, D.W. Swick & Son Funeral and Cremation Services in Sciotoville, with Frank Stidman officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg.
