Raymond Brown Cunningham, Sr. 99 of Portsmouth, passed away Friday, May 27, 2016 at the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth. He was born on November 17, 1916 in Portsmouth the son of the late Harry and Estella Grace Brown Cunningham. Raymond was also preceded in death by wives, Thelma Ardith Armbrister Cunningham and Thelma Irene Bush Armbrister Cunningham; two brothers, Oscar and Howard Cunningham; 2 sisters, Katherine Miller and Alice Leinegar; a son-in-law, Dale Spradlin; as well as, Alfred Armbrister. Raymond was a WWII Army Air Corp veteran who had taught radio communications while serving; served in Burma China India Theatre, a supervisor of maintenance at Southern Hills in Portsmouth and a service manager for Montgomery Wards in Portsmouth.
Raymond is survived by 3 children, JoAnne (Tom) Etterling of El Paso, Tx and Barbara (Charles) Jones of Wheelersburg and Ray Cunningham, Jr. of Portsmouth as well as Carolyn (Richard) Spradlin of South Point and Sandra Spradlin of Minford; 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg. Interment will follow at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg with graveside military rites presented by the James Irwin Post 622 American Legion of Minford and William A. Baker Post 363 American Legion in Lucasville. The family will receive friends from 11 until the funeral hour on Tuesday. The family has chosen the SOMC Hospice Center as their charity of choice.
