Richard “Dick” Aron Getchell, lovingly known as RAGS, age 79, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2026, peacefully at OhioHealth Hospice House in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his family.

Born June 20, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, he was the son of the late Alford "Al" Aaron and Ethel Edwina (Peets) Getchell.

Dick proudly served his country in the United States Navy, spending part of his service aboard a nuclear submarine during the Vietnam era. After completing his military service, he worked in nuclear power before transitioning into quality control for Motorola, where he remained until his retirement. He also served as a member of the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department for several years.

A devoted Harley-Davidson rider, Dick traveled across the United States on his beloved bike, Lucy, and participated in numerous Run for the Wall rides. His biker community affectionately gave him the name RAGS, a reflection of the deep friendships he formed on the road. His passion for honoring veterans and especially those who gave their lives in service to our country was a defining part of who he was.

Dick was a man of strong faith and a dedicated Christian. He served as a Chaplain and devoted himself to helping anyone in need, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. During the Christmas season, he found joy in volunteering as Santa at hospitals and churches, bringing smiles to countless children. He was a cherished member of Life Point Church in Portsmouth, Ohio, where his kindness and compassion touched many lives.

Dick is survived by the love of his life, his beloved wife, Margaret “Megg” Getchell of Otway, Ohio; his son Shawn (Loretta) Getchell of Lipan, Texas; daughter-in-law Cindy Getchell of Lipan, Texas; daughters Brittany Gocus-Browning (Ross Barber) of Burleson, Texas, Kristen (Kevin) Wise of Crystal Lake, Illinois, and Angel Kemper of Wiley, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Hunter Mills, Barrett Browning, Cameron Wise, Audrey Wise, and Gus May, as well as his godchildren Kameron Bryant and Savannah Garcia and numerous other family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his son, Christopher “Kit” Getchell of Lipan, Texas, and his sister, Margaret Ethel Getchell of Waldport, Oregon.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers at OhioHealth Hospice House for their exceptional compassion and care.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 18, 2026, 1:00 PM at Life Point Church, 1644 11th St., Portsmouth, Ohio, Pastor Ryan Hunt officiating with Military Honors to follow; Visitation begins at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mission M25 RFTW at missionm25.org (Donate, RFTW Project Number 03101P) or Life Point Church, 1644 11th St., Portsmouth, Ohio.
