Rita Joan Hanes, 88 of Portsmouth, passed away on September 28, 2016 at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth. She was born on October 9, 1927, the daughter of the late William and Jesse Cremeans Dever. Rita was also preceded in death by one brother, Roy Dever and one sister, Doris Kinzer. She was a member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and had worked for Security Central National Bank, Dr. Scurlock dentistry, and at the Scioto County Courthouse.

Rita is survived by her husband of 70 years, Wilbur B. Hanes, whom she married on September 28, 1946 in Portsmouth; one son, Larry (Jirong Lu) Hanes of Carmel, Ind.; two daughters, Joann (Randy) Waugh of Portsmouth and Nancy (Basil) Georgi of Jackson; one sister, Dona Ashley of Clearwater, Fl.; 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Tim Roth officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral hour on Monday at the funeral home.
