Russell "Rusty" Dean Loper, 60, passed away at home on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Born on January 23, 1966, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Rusty was a beloved son of the late Russell and Maryann (James) Loper. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin, and his sister, Vicky Pittenger.
Rusty was a man of deep faith, a loving family member, and a friend to many. He found great joy in serving the Lord and was a devoted member of his church community. He loved to sing at church and often preached, sharing God's word with sincerity and compassion. For many years, Rusty played the Omnichord during church services, using his God-given musical talent to worship and encourage others. Though neuropathy eventually affected his hands, it never diminished his love for music or his faith.
Music was one of Rusty's greatest passions. He enjoyed spending time listening to records on his record player and had a remarkable ability to play music by ear, despite never learning to read sheet music. His gift for music brought joy to those around him and was a reflection of his creative spirit.
Rusty also enjoyed football and was a loyal Ohio State Buckeyes fan, cheering for his team through every season. Some of his happiest moments were the simple ones—sitting outside on the porch, watching the rain fall during a storm, and appreciating the peace and beauty of God's creation.
Above all, Rusty cherished his family. He leaves behind his wife, Jennifer Loper of Sciotoville; his son, Austin Loper of Portsmouth; and his brother, Mike Wise of Mason, Ohio. Though Rusty has departed this earthly life, his faith, music, kindness, and the memories he created with those he loved will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, 10:30 AM at Victory Tabernacle, 1131 Washington Boulevard North, West Portsmouth, Ohio 45663. A Graveside Service will follow, 12:30 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. SWICK & SON FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES in Wheelersburg.
