Age 88, of Sciotoville died Saturday morning, June 11, 2011 at Hempstead Manor in Portsmouth. He was born November 2, 1922 in Magoffin County, KY to the late Dudley and Melissa (Murphy) Powers. Sidney proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for 28 years having served in three wars, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, LaFern Russell Powers, a daughter, Lisa Powers, 3 sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Gladys (Loop) Powers of Sciotoville; 2 stepdaughters, Diana Franklin (Brad) of Garrison, KY, Sharon Wright of Sciotoville; several nieces and nephews including Shirley VanDeusen and Joann Russell, both of Portsmouth. Funeral services will be at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville with Sam Salyer officiating. Interment will be Wednesday at Red Hill Cemetery in Hodgenville, KY. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 - 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
