William A. Holbrook, age 88, of Wheelersburg died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. He was born May 3, 1920 in Cleveland, VA to William A. And Lu Ashbrook Holbrook. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, including the Phillipines, Luzon, and New Guinea during WWII. On May 24, 1942 he married June Morris in Greenup, KY and then lived and worked in Huntington, W.V. until 1974 where he worked in Sales for South Laboratory. He then moved to Beckley, W.V. where he owned his own business in Mining safety equipment. In 1982 he retired and moved to Wheelersburg. William enjoyed gardening, reading, and was a longtime member of the Wheelersburg Church of Christ. In 2005 he received his 50 year membership pin in the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by one son James (Jay) and his wife Beverly of Louisville, KY; five grandchildren, Kenneth S. Rick and Scott A. Rick both of Louisville, James C. Holbrook of Nashville, TN, Kristin C. Bentley of Augusta, GA, and Sheri R. Showalter of Louisville; 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife June in 2004; a brother Samuel Holbrook and a sister Mary Marcum. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville with Pastor Lynn Wessel officiating. Interment will be in Vernon Cemetery with military honors provided by the James Dickey Post #23 of Portsmouth. Friends may call from 11 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Wolfe-Nelson Funeral Home in Sciotoville is handling the arrangements.
