Age 89 of South Webster, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. He was born April 4, 1927 in South Webster to William Jennings Bryant Shumate and Alzia (Frith) Shumate. An Army veteran of WWII, he worked his entire professional life for Western Southern Life Insurance. He enjoyed camping, woodworking, gardening, and fishing in Alaska. He and his late wife, Emma, traveled frequently to Myrtle Beach and enjoyed their five driving trips to Alaska, camping and fishing along the way. He was a member of South Webster Baptist Church.
Toby is survived by son, William (Peggy) Shumate, Jr. of Wellston; daughter, Stephanie (Rob) Vance of Mingo Junction; sister, Anna Mae Blanton of GA; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma, in 2015; daughter, Debbie Lynn Shumate; brother, Billy Joe Shumate; and sister, Mary Warren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at D.W. SWICK-NELSON FUNERAL HOME in South Webster with Pastor Merit Smith officiating. Interment will follow at South Webster Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the service.
