William C. Perkins, 89, lovingly known as “Papaw,” passed away at home, Wednesday, May 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the legacy of a life devoted to service, faith, and community. Born on July 26, 1936, in New Boston, he was the son of the late Shelby John Perkins and Bonnie (Carr) Smith.

William shared nearly seven decades of marriage with the love of his life, Darlene (Curtis) Perkins, whom he married on February 16, 1957. Together they built a family rooted in love, hard work, and devotion. He is survived by his beloved wife Darlene; his children, Tom Perkins, Dianna (Carl) Young, Sandy Perkins, and Mary Ellen (Chris) Aeh; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life. He is also survived by his sisters, Laoma Spradlin, Donna Holcomb, and Julia Smith; and his brother, Tony (Nancy) Perkins, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Pam Perkins Euton; his grandsons, Travis Euton and Brett Young; his sisters, Elaine Bailey, Shelby Jean Gilcrease, and Shirley Cortez; and his brother, Roscoe Smith.

A man deeply committed to serving others, William dedicated 28 years to the Rosemount Volunteer Fire Department, serving 15 years as Fire Chief. He was also a retired paramedic with Portsmouth Ambulance and a proud Charter Member of Rosemount Squad 12. His dedication to protecting and caring for his community left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Beyond his public service, William faithfully attended Cedar Street Church in New Boston. He enjoyed giving back through youth sports as a coach for Clay Little League and as an umpire for OHSAA softball. He was also an avid fan of Ohio State Buckeyes football, cheering faithfully for his Buckeyes every season.

William will be remembered for his steady presence, servant’s heart, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family. To many he was Chief, Coach, Medic, or Friend — but to those who knew him best, he was simply “Papaw,” a title he cherished most of all.
